More than you wanted to know about Les Bleus sex scandal

Well it looks like the other two players implicated in the ongoing sex scandal are Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa after all according to various reports in the media and they will be interviewed next week.  The Spanish press is also reporting that Florentino Perez has reportedly thrown in the towel regarding Benzema: that this latest stunt is the last straw. The club are said to be fed up with his poor attitude and lack of commitment and his failure to live up to expectations.

French footballers, Ribery and Govou, in prostitute sex scandal

A sex scandal has threatened to engulf France’s football team after two of its leading players were questioned about under-age prostitutes.

Franck Ribéry, 27, and Sidney Govou, 30, we resummoned before an examining judge following allegations that a nightclub on Paris’s Champs-Élysées employed prostitutes, some under the age of 18.
Two star players of “Les Bleus” were questioned as “witnesses” and are not suspected of any illegal acts.
However, a judicial official said one regular at the club had admitted having sexual relations with a Moroccan-born prostitute, but denied knowing she was under 18.
The prosecution service official, who declined to be named according to regular French practice, said: “It is up to the judge, Andre Dando, to decide whether or not to bring charges against him.”
Soliciting sex with an under-age minor in France carries a three-year jail term and a fine of €45,000 (£39,500).
Two other French internationals — one playing for a Spanish side, the other for a southern French team — are also due to be interviewed by police in Paris.
A man accused of pimping activities and referred to as “Abou” was arrested last week. The head of the Café Zaman nightclub in France —where privacy laws shield footballers from kiss-and-tell press coverage — and two other “intermediaries” were also arrested. A judicial source said a football agent was also implicated.
Mr Ribéry, a midfielder, is considered France’s top player. He joined the German club Bayern Munich for more than £25 million in 2007, and has frequently been linked with a move to Chelsea.
Mr Ribéry converted to Islam to marry his French-Algerian wife, Wahiba. The couple have two daughters.
Mr Govou, a winger for Lyons football club, is single but has a five-year-old daughter.
Their connection with the sex scandal could not have come at a worse time, two months before the World Cup finals in South Africa.
France’s qualification was controversial as Thierry Henry, the former Arsenal player, was alleged to have handled the ball to set up a goal against Ireland which secured their place in the finals.
Sophie Bottai, Mr Ribéry’s lawyer, said her client was called as a witness “to explain his relations with an acquaintance close to the escort girl organiser” but had no other part in this “private” affair.

Thierry Braillard, counsel for Mr Govou, who also denies any wrongdoing, said: “My client would like to affirm he has no link whatsoever with any pimp network. Sidney Govou has notably never set foot in the notorious Café Zaman in Paris.”

Bayern Munich's Ribery faces probe over prostitution scandal

One of Bayern Munich’s star footballers, Frenchman Franck Ribery, may be charged over alleged relations with an underage call girl, but says he did not know she was a minor, a judicial official said on Monday.

The case falls less than two months before Ribery, the Bayern Munich midfielder and one of the stars of his national team, is due to play for France in the football World Cup in South Africa.

The prosecution service official, who declined to be named according to regular French practice, told AFP that Ribery had admitted having relations with the prostitute but says he did not know she was underage.

"It is up to the judge Andre Dando to decide whether or not to bring charges against him," the source said.

Soliciting sex with an underage minor in France carries a three-year jail term and a fine of €45,000.

On Sunday, Ribery's lawyer Sophie Bottai told AFP the player was quizzed as a witness by French police investigating prostitution in a case centred on a Paris night club frequented by certain French internationals.

The judicial official said on Monday that investigators had found evidence of prostitution involving minors at the club.

Bottai said 27-year-old Ribery was summoned by police to explain his relationship with an acquaintance who had connections with a call girl ring and stressed that no charges had been brought against him.

L'Equipe newspaper reported Sunday that a third French international player could be questioned in the coming weeks as part of the same investigation.

"There is no reaction to give on a matter like this," the president of the French Football Federation Jean-Pierre Escalettes told AFP on Sunday.

"An investigation is underway and I have no information on that. At the moment it is not possible to make a comment," he added.

Ribery is a key player in the French international side, taking over in the midfield from Zinedine Zidane who was a mainstay in the French team that won the World Cup in 1998 and reached the final four years ago.

He made his breakthrough into football's big-time with Marseille in France before transferring to Bayern Munich. He has been linked with a high-profile transfer to Spain or possibly England in the close season this summer.

Prostitution probe hits France's football team

PARIS - French international footballer Franck Ribery may be charged over alleged relations with an under-age call-girl, but says he did not know she was a minor, a judicial official said on Monday.
Sources close to the investigation said police also questioned another France international, Lyon winger Sydney Govou, and that other players from the France team could be questioned in the coming weeks.
Judicial sources said the manager of the club and three others including a waiter had been charged in the case and were in custody.
If charged and found guilty Ribery, who is married and has two daughters, could face a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros ($61,500 Cdn).
Bayern Munich's manager Louis van Gaal said on Monday that Ribery "has only been questioned as a witness . . . we should not make any declarations while the judicial proceedings are underway."
He added: "Is he suffering from the situation? I don't know but I don't think so. I think he is more concerned about Lyon," whom Bayern Munich play on Wednesday in the semi-final of the European championship.
"There is no reaction to give on a matter like this," the president of the French Football Federation (FFF) Jean-Pierre Escalettes told AFP on Sunday.
The police inquiry could not have come at a worse time for French coach Raymond Domenech and his players just 50 days before the start of the World Cup.
The French football team's image is already tarnished after they beat Ireland in the qualifying stages with the help of a handball by striker Thierry Henry.
"This is yet another blow for the French team," a source at the FFF who wished to remain anonymous told AFP.

Benzema and ben arfa, Ribéry and maybe Govou (who says no) why i'm not surprise. In football, the real sport isn't touch the ball on a field. Everybody knows that. Saddly nearly all foot footballers are like that, but the worse it's that the prostitutes was underage. And it's not only in football.See Tiger woods.

Yes Claire we are almost used to sex scandals involving athletes but the disgusting part about this one is that the girl was only 16 years old and like Icemom says, it would be naive to think that she was the only under aged girl involved. According to one of the articles, Ribery was involved with her for 2 years - even flying her to Germany for hook ups there. i wouldn't be shocked at all if it were just Benzema and Ben Arfa - I expect this sort of behavior from them but its shocking that its Franck who acts like such a devoted family man and devout Muslim.
We've had our share of sleazy sex scandals here in the States each one sleazier than the last- Tiger Woods and his skanks, Jesse James and his skanks, John Edwards - who cheated on his Cancer stricken wife with an uber skank probably takes the cake but as you said the worst part of the French NT scandal is that it involved a minor.

Sex Scandals
This has been a bad week for "Athletes that Icemom Respects." This one almost beats the Ribery scandal. Tiki Barber....one of my favorite (now retired/and a former local guy) NY Giants left his wife of 11 years (2 kids) while she was 8 months pregnant for a 23 year old (he's 35) CBS Intern. It actually ruined my Holiday. He hooked up with her while his wife was 3 months pregnant. I need to go for a VERY long run....

Re: Sex Scandals
I heard about the Tiki Barber scandal. Didn't Tina Fey also skewer him - along with Jesse James - on Saturday Night Live? What a sleazebag he is. I think Oliver Kahn did the same thing with his pregnant wife - left her for some 20 year old barmaid. The German members can give us all the lurid details.

Re: Sex Scandals
That seems to be pretty normal in the world of sport. Olli Kahn left his wife Simone when she was pregnant in the so called 9th month (36 week) for partygirl Verena Kehrt. After a couple of years with Verena (during this time he always wore his wedding ring!?!) he left her to go back to Simone and now he left Simone for another, younger model. Simone and Verena comfort themself with new partners.
They should look at your "teutonic sex god" Jogi who is wedded more than 20 years with his wife and they still seem to be happy with each other. They visited last weekend a football match together.
Regarding Benzema he wants to be the "bad boy" and not "Mr. Nice Guy".

Re: Sex Scandals
Oh really? The Teutonic Sex God and the Missus were spotted together? there are pictures of them together? do you have a link? I notice he rarely wears a wedding ring - what's up with that?

Across State lines
Just thought of this while I was running. (I was supposed to be de-stressing) If the allegations are true about Ribery.... he flew this underage prostitute from France to Germany for hook-ups.... Is that like it is in the States (Re: Elliot Spitzer)? Wasn't he the one who flew his prostitute across State lines for hook-ups. There are so many I can't keep all this mess straight. But surely flying an underage prostitute from one Country to another is a pretty big offense. If so..... Franck better worry more about Lyon.
talia_leo: pic#98849500talia_lia on April 20th, 2010 08:56 am (UTC)
Ben Arfa is also denying that he's the one that had relations with the girl but its safe to assume he's set foot (and probably other body parts) inside Cafe Zaman.
He doesn't deny knowing Abou but claims he hasn't heard from him in about 8 or 9 months.
magician10magician10 on April 20th, 2010 05:03 pm (UTC)
I really don't know what to say. This is just the biggest mess the French team could've gotten themselves into after murdering someone.
